Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested: that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read, but not curiously, and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. (Sir Francis Bacon)

The Snow Queen (Mercedes Lackey)

Mercedes Lackey is one of my all-time favorite authors. For years I've enjoyed her Valdemar series, re-reading them until the words have been worn off the pages of each book. I recently discovered another series by her, The Five Hundred Kingdoms, and I've eagerly searched each book out.

The Five Hundred Kingdoms are based on fairy tales, or rather The Tradition of fairy tales. Magic is an excepted way of life, and Godmothers and Heroes are a necessary part of life.

The Snow Queen is the fourth book of the series, and it tells Aleksia's tale (Aleksia being, obviously, the Snow Queen aka the Godmother of the North). The tale includes an imposter, witches and wizards, and even true love. If you're a fan of Hans Christian Anderson, you'll recognize many elements of his Snow Queen, although Mercedes Lackey puts her own twist on it. This is a fun, easy book to read.
